What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. Once integrated, a crown can be secured to the top of the implant. This artificial tooth looks, feels and performs just like your natural teeth. It is also possible to use multiple implants to support a bridge or a denture.
Top 3 Benefits of Dental Implants:
- Implant secured, replacement teeth are more comfortable and provide a better performance than traditional dentures. There is no slipping or movement when you bite down allowing you to eat and chew with confidence.
- Dental implants are better than bridgework at replacing missing teeth because they eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
- When teeth are missing the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Dental implants preserve bone integrity. There is no bone loss similar to what you see with bridgework, were over time a gap develops underneath the false tooth.
The implant process may be a little long but people are often surprise at how little discomfort or pain they experience.

For successful implant placement, a sufficient amount and quality of bone is essential around the site of insertion. If you are seeking dental implant treatment and you are deficient in bone volume, Dr. Daphne Kwan can use bone grafting to create sufficient bone prior to the placement of your dental implants.
The bone in the upper and lower arch of the mouth can be lost when one or more teeth fall out. When patients decide to replace missing teeth with dental implants, insufficient bone mass can prevent them from qualifying for the procedure. Bone grafting or ridge augmentation addresses inadequate bone mass by filling in eroded areas with bone harvested from the patient’s own body, or artificial or natural alternative. The new bone helps promote new bone growth that will eventually support a dental implant.
“In some well planed instances, we would prefer to remove the tooth and do bone grafting at the same appointment. This aids in preserving as much bone as possible at the out start and minimize more complex surgery at a later date.” – says Dr. Daphne Kwan
